Both Stephen and Kyle are right, having had several start-ups there is no magic wand that will attract viewers. The task at hand is slow, methodical and requires continuous efforts. The biggest mistakes that start-ups make, is the moment they get some viewers they thing the job is done and then find themselves having to start from scratch again.
Participate in social media, business networks, don't try to push your product when involved in groups, let them come to you, introduce yourself with you product and leave it at that. Help others, and what goes around will come back to help you, good luck.

There are tons of tools to get people's attention (online advertising, social media, etc.), most of which start using on your own with little outside help.
Find ways to reward those that help you grow - your power users or supply content or share it, businesses that encourage there customers to rate them, etc.

Hi Stephen,
Great advice! How do you reckon is the best way to utilize social media into our advantage? Perhaps any input how to break through the barriers of just letting your friends know about your business and to instead go break through to the 2nd degree of friendship?
Thanks again.

There's nothing easy about spreading the word about your new startup. It takes a lot of work, it's not fun, and no matter how much money you have to spend there's no guaranteed success.
Without much information about your startup, I will say this... You need to be personally involved with every user of your service. Personally contact everyone who takes the time to use you service. Say thank you and ask lots of questions. Figure out a way to help everyone even if it's not directly related to your business. You'll develop raving fans and find out new ways to help customers which you can use to evolve your business over time.
I try to do this with Whinot... it's hard, it's not super glamorous, but I learn a lot and try to use the information to evolve the business to a better place.

Hi Kyle,
I think this is a very interesting advice. Regarding my start up, we are a social review company where our users will be able to find, rate, and review local businesses and more as we develop more features everyday.
I think it's interesting to hear to get involved with each of my users. I'll definitely look into this. Thanks for the advice.

Develop and deploy an effective online strategy and allow time and persistent campaign to put your business on viral mode online.

You may call it a brutal attack or else, but for me it is just being upfront and clear: What are you trying to sell here? What's your business' elevated idea/ benefit? Even though I found it hard to get what exactly you are trying to sell, I think the answer to seek more market awareness in your business case might be 'DIGITAL'. Let users (target audience) actually experience how easy to adopt your social-and-business knowledge information to make their searches and decisions easy and quick in day-to-day life, especially when they may not have more than couple of minutes to take decisions and find information your are offering.
Digital billboard, a free mobile app and perhaps a small showcase on big social sites could give you the initial reach to the customers. I can provide details on each of these three if you would like. All these marketing methods are very cost effective!
In closing, back to my opening comments, please try to make your home page at least well articulated for first time visitors. Here is quick test to put in use, "If a new user (first or second time visitors on your site) can absorb your offerings, select and reach the desired information in 3-4 clicks, your home page is all set to engage the user for next 2-3 minutes, which is all you want!"
Hope it helps!
Best regards,

Hi Chris,
I like what you said about participating in business networks and all. Although I think the market here in Jakarta is a bit different than the one in US (I've lived in San Francisco for a couple of years) in a sense that there are less "network gatherings" for entrepreneurs here. But that being said, there are a few that I can put my attention on.
Thanks for the advice!
